In January I paddled out into some strong swells. Took a while to get my rhythm but found myself catching some decent rides and an occasional tuberide during February.

March however, looked a lot like this.

April has also been flipping me around like a grown man in a washing machine but the big sets seem to have passed and I feel fitter and stronger to deal with the next swell.

I was very lucky the other evening to be allowed to attend a private Q&A with Gilbert and George at the White Cube Masons Yard hosted by Louis Vuitton, surrounded by works from their current Urethra Postcard Art Exhibition. Gilbert & George are great orators and it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. I had seen the exhibition two weeks before which sets at an equal standing the themes of national pride, immigration, work, sex and the universality of London, through the medium of collected postcards.

These themes reminded me of another artist I had chanced upon lately on my recent trip to Paris.
One evening I passed Gallerie Oliver Robert in the Marais and my eye caught the work of Julien Beneyton.
Despite the gallery being closed, the kind attendent let me in for a closer look and I was pleasantly mesmerised by Mr. Beneyton's work which I share with you here.

The work captures the seemingly mundane and everyday in a way that makes the subject suddenly multi-layered, faceted, dimensional...choose your own word for complex.
I have been to many of the places depicted in his work and the intensity of Cligancourt Market, Amsterdam's Red light district or the Bronx as I remember them are there in the pictures.

Both Gilbert & George and Julien Beneyton's exhibitions are on until February 19th 2011.
See them both if you can.

For me, having those rare kicks was always what it was about. My Jordan IIIs in white and snake with the royal blue sole I copped from Global Sports in Shepherds Bush, of which I have never bumped into another pair, remain my all times for that reason.

On that note, Mr. Hare made seven pairs of these black Eel skin Onyx loafers available from Oki-ni. This morning there are only 4 pairs left. Not bad considering they only went up last night about 5pmGMT.

Similarly, let me introduce the Fangio. I wanted to make an Opanca soled shoe which is a process where the outer sole is stamped in a big industrial machine like a car door and then the rest of the shoe is attached to it. You will see a few variations of the Fangio popping up in various stores around the world this season, but this one in butter beige Tuscan suede with the flagrant bouquet is the first. Just three pairs left at Colette.

These are both so rare, they are not even on my website.

Throughout January I have been on the road promoting the empire for AW11 (more on that soon) and it gave me the opportunity to visit a couple of stores who have received early deliveries of SS11.

I genuinely still can't believe Mr. Hare shoes sell in some of the stores they do.

Here is the Onyx Loafer in Eel with it's own spotlit box in L'Eclaireur, Boissy d'Anglais. They made it look so special I didn't even realise it was one of mine.

Also in L'Eclaireur, The Onyx Wholecut.

This is the Goat Camus in Colette. I love how the shrunken goat leather takes on an entirely different pattern on every shoe as the lasting process flattens the natural texture in some areas and not in others. Every pair is completely different.

Tan suede king Tubby's!! A rare beast I only saw for the first time myself when they landed at Dover Street Market. I want some. You won't even find these on my website. There are various one off King Tubby versions around the world including white ones, vachetta and suede ones at Gravity Pope in Canada and of course the King Tubby Specials.

I never shot the studs on the back of the Burroughs before because on the samples they were the wrong size and crooked. This didn't deter all the brave retailers who bought them though. The production Burroughs however, are perfect. I love this shoe. It is made from the softest Nappa leather so it is like wearing a dance shoe in terms of comfort, but it has a vachetta toe cap which will always keep the toe formal and proper. The toecap is deconstructed, as in it is not connected to the body. What at first sight just looks like a normal black shoe is in fact a wealth of technical and design details experimenting with comfort, aesthetics and a little bit of punk.

The Onyx Soir and Onyx Whole-cuts at Dover Street Market. The Onyx Soir has a seam down the toe. One side has patent leather and the instep of the shoe is in high shine leather. This was to give the shoe a more faceted effect. When light hits each side it reflects differently. Then there is the suede wally closure so this elegant evening shoe will fit men with high arches who normally shun oxford closures.

The shoes are not that dazzling and I can think of a few bands in those days who probably had some pretty fancy zapatos, who are obviously missing, but I wish she had kept it up.

DOOM! - The greatest rapper with no chain you never heard

For my little brothers Birthday (Mr. Man of the Illersapiens) My Moms bought him two tickets to see MF Doom at the Brixton Academy on October 14th 2010. Seeing as I had introduced littleman to my hero of all hero rappers many years back, and we had shared many conversations on the intricacies of Mr. Dooms flow, and Mr. Man has been hugely influenced in his own rhymes by Doom, he graciously decided that the best recipient for that spare ticket was Mr. Hare. Thanks Moms!!

I would like to say I bought Dooms first album "Doomsday" when it came out, but at that time around 1999 after years of being a die hard first generation Rap head, I was deeply disillusioned by what Puff Daddy and even Jay-Z were doing to Hip Hop. I caught Public Enemy when they played. I caught Native Tongues when A Tribe Called Quest only had "Lost my Wallet in El Segundo" released so far, and I was a huge fan of a little outfit called KMD who released an underground classic album called "Mr. Hood" (Peachfuzz). In that group was a kid with a sublime flow named Zev LOve X who's rhymes for many years rattled around my head.
(Pigment! Is this a defect of birth or more an example of the richness of Earth?).

I bought that album on Import!!

My Hip Hop Sabbatical was fruitful because I got into all the other music I had ignored during my backpack years. Fishbone, Peaches, Cutty Ranks, Larry Levan, Sublime, Nirvana and the huge influence of Trevor Jackson all spring to mind. I didn't completely abandon Hip Hop at any point. Wu Tang forever and Mos Def have never left my side.

But Anyway... in 2003 I bought a vinyl double LP (remember those) called "Vaudeville Villain" by a cat named Viktor Vaughn and a few months later in 2004 I bought a CD called Madvillain. Both pieces of work were completely new and weird and elaborate like Hip Hop was in 92!! To this day both remain the most played on my I-tunes. It turns out that Madvillain, Viktor Vaughn, another cat I soon discovered called King Geedorah are all persona's of one man called MFDoom. Doom is a poet of extraordinary calibre. MF Doom is also the grown up persona of one Zev Love X from KMD. My long lost friend. wiki-wiki!!

So back to Brixton. 5000+ people predominately white, predominately male, as to be expected. But I am pleased to note that 25% of the crowd are either female and there of their own volition or a plethora of independent ethnics like myself. If the world ended outside the Academy tonight, the gene pool on which future civilisation depended had a chance.

I knew I was taking a risk seeing Doom live because I have spent more time in the presence of this mans work than any other artist alive or dead. The rap-scapes are phenomenal. The vocabulary is expansive and the rhymes are mathematical. Algebraic even. What possible bonus to hear them in the flesh?

You know Doom's stage show is not going to consist of more than the mic and the mask. Maybe some visuals if you are lucky. To all three ends he did not disappoint. The real bonus was in the 5000+ other people who could mouth all the words to some of the most intricate slang you will ever hear. We all just wanted to be there to see it once. (Vaughn! The Flying Vaudeville villain. Who Ain't give a flying fuck who ain't not feelin' him!) I saw the show. I got the "Villain" T-shirt. I was there.

Anyway...the point is...most have never heard of him and probably never will. His fame is not crucial to the measure of his success. His work, for the people who pursue it, can't be bettered. We don't know what he looks like and we don't know where he lives. All we have is his work to stand or fall on it's own merits.

I wish all things were conceived in this way.

So while I am in town at Fashions Night Out last night doing my bit for the economy, some drunk does this to my car. My only consolation is that seeing as my car is made from 3.5mm American steel, I know the front of Homeboy's car probably came off a lot worse. You will notice that all that glass and plastic on the floor didn't come off my car. I will never know because the rat-bastard never left any details.
